Ask the Expert: Brain Health and Coping through Improv (2023)
On January 25, Parkinson Society BC (PSBC) hosted a panel discussion with Dr. Jonathan Squires (movement disorder specialist), Dan Dumsha (Tightrope Theatre’s Director of Improv for Work and Wellness), and Peter Jarvis (Tightrope Theatre's Improv for PD faculty and Parkinson’s performance troupe member), that aims to broaden our understanding of the important role improvisation (improv) can play in managing Parkinson’s.
The discussion included an explanation about improv, how it can benefit those with Parkinson’s, and what to expect from engagement in an improv program. The evidence for improvisation for brain health and the potential for helping those living with PD was covered as Dr. Squires shared his medical insight on the various benefits and specifically, how learned improvisation skills could translate into coping skills to manage the often unpredictable day-to-day experiences of living with Parkinson's. Dan Dumsha highlighted the history of Tightrope Theatre’s improv program and plans, and Peter Jarvis spoke about his experience participating in an improv program as a person living with Parkinson’s.
