May Symposium: Bladder and Bowel Issues (2023)

Dr. Jennifer Locke delved into the impact of Parkinson's disease on the bladder during this webinar. She detailed the various symptoms associated with the disease, such as overactive bladder, urgency, frequency, and incontinence. Dr. Locke emphasized the crucial role of the brain in regulating urination and how Parkinson's can affect specific brain regions responsible for these processes. The webinar also addressed the available treatments for bladder problems in Parkinson's disease, including medications like anticholinergics and beta-3 agonists, along with Botox injections.

Furthermore, Dr. Locke stressed the significance of following monitoring and surveillance guidelines for individuals with Parkinson's disease and bladder dysfunction. She underscored the importance of involving a urologist in the care of men experiencing bladder dysfunction, especially those with enlarged prostates. Reasons to seek urologist consultation included urinary leakage, frequent urinary tract infections, difficulties with catheterization, changes in renal bladder ultrasound results, and the presence of stones. Dr. Locke recommended that Parkinson's disease patients with bladder dysfunction undergo yearly evaluations and potential renal ultrasounds to effectively monitor and manage their symptoms.
