Caregiving Series: Strategies for Working Well with Healthcare Providers (2023)
In this presentation, Jennifer Allen, a registered social worker and Parkinson Society BC Healthcare Navigator, emphasized the importance of strong relationships with healthcare professionals. She highlighted their crucial role in caring for those with brain-related conditions, such as Parkinson's disease. Jennifer also stressed the need for caregivers to understand the healthcare system and improve their communication skills.
The webinar covered key topics such as preparing for healthcare provider meetings. She advised attendees to bring a notebook, create a pre-appointment agenda, and be clear about their concerns. During appointments, taking notes and summarizing discussions afterward was recommended, along with using provided resources.
The presentation discussed effective communication in physician visits and home support scenarios, emphasizing planning, clear communication, and building rapport. Jennifer suggested contacting Parkinson Society BC for referrals and participating in support groups. She mentioned that home care assessments can be initiated by anyone, not just physicians, though prioritization may occur based on hospital discharges.
Finally, she also touched on additional resources for Parkinson's patients and acknowledged the need for a future presentation on private services.
