New Diagnosis Workshop: How Can a Social Worker, SLP, and OT help? (2023)
Elaine Book (social worker), Allison Haas (speech-language pathologist), and Rosa Jafari (occupational therapist) presented this talk, focusing on their roles in assisting individuals with Parkinson's disease. Rosa’s primary focus was on enhancing daily functioning and activities, offering personalized recommendations and support. Allison addressed communication challenges, including dysarthria, and presented therapy options. Additionally, Elaine Book addressed caregiver stress and provided assistance tailored to the geriatric population.
Throughout the webinar, the content emphasized the critical importance of speech, voice, and swallow functions in daily life and provided actionable recommendations to optimize their performance. It stressed the value of early intervention and therapy to preserve the quality of life for individuals with Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, the webinar underscored the integral role of social work in delivering emotional and social support while addressing concerns related to employment, anxiety, depression, and caregiving. The presentation encouraged self-management and advocated for the inclusion of joy and hope as coping mechanisms for those affected by Parkinson's disease.
