In this webinar, sexual health clinician Shea Hocaloski focused on sexual well-being in the context of Parkinson's disease, particularly addressing men. She stressed the importance of open communication and intimacy in relationships, offering strategies for managing common sexual concerns. Shea advocated for a holistic assessment of sexual well-being, considering factors like mood, coping, stress, medications, and physical changes.
She also discussed caregiver burnout and the need for strategies to create space and take breaks. The talk also touched upon the impact of grief and loss on both individuals with Parkinson's and their partners, suggesting ways to cope. Dating and sexual well-being tips, including online dating and self-exploration, were provided. The webinar also mentioned the possibility of compulsive sexual behaviours in Parkinson's disease, emphasizing the importance of discussing them with healthcare professionals.
In terms of managing sexual health, mindfulness was highlighted as a practice to enhance concentration, mood, and overall quality of life, particularly for those with chronic pain and stress. Treating erectile dysfunction was addressed, with options ranging from medications like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis to intracavernosal injections, vacuum devices, and the use of massagers or vibrators. Effective communication, seeking support from healthcare professionals, and focusing on pleasure were encouraged over solely ejaculation concerns.
