Drumming for Parkinson's Information Session (2020)

Doug Pickard, a REMO HealthRhythms facilitator and Rock Steady Boxing affiliate owner, presented a webinar focusing on the therapeutic potential of drumming for Parkinson's disease. Drumming, particularly in group settings known as drum circles, was discussed for its stress reduction, immune system boosting, and emotion-releasing benefits. Doug highlighted how drumming can notably improve motor symptoms like gait freezing, rigidity, and walking speed in Parkinson's patients. Additionally, it enhances overall quality of life, offering purpose, social connection, and emotional significance.

Rhythmic entrainment, where participants synchronize their drumming, was emphasized as a key factor in both motor and emotional improvements in drumming therapy. Doug explained that drumming releases endorphins, enables self-expression, and provides physical stimulation. Group drumming fosters community, connectivity, and self-discovery, vital for those with Parkinson's to counteract loneliness, which can negatively affect the disease's progression.
