Kelowna Regional Conference: Nutrition for Parkinson's (2022)
Dr. Sally Stewart, an associate professor of teaching and health and exercise sciences, delivered this webinar on nutrition's role in Parkinson's disease. She stressed the importance of regular, natural eating and the significance of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant foods for brain neuron protection.
In her talk, Dr. Stewart discouraged processed food consumption and cautioned against relying on fad diets for Parkinson's patients. She highlighted the importance of a balanced diet for overall health and discussed the impact of carbohydrates, the ketogenic diet, mood-boosting foods, supplements, and recommended diets like the MIND and Mediterranean diets for Parkinson's management. Constipation management tips were provided, along with advice for those following gluten-free or dairy-free diets due to allergies.
Dr. Stewart also delved into dairy and wheat intolerance, suggesting allergies or lactose intolerance as potential causes and mentioning some tolerance for ancient grains and limited dairy. She explained the link between high-protein diets and uric acid increase, which may contribute to bladder stone formation, but emphasized the need for a personalized dietary evaluation for a complete answer.
