Global Symposium: Journey from a Happy Life to Emerging Therapies (2022)

Dr. Michael Okun is recognized as one of the world’s top movement disorder specialists and leading researchers of Parkinson’s disease. In this webinar, he emphasized the critical need for collaboration and community involvement to address the growing prevalence of Parkinson's and its potential impact on healthcare systems.

The webinar discussed the importance of advocacy and personalized care in Parkinson's treatment, along with the role of virtual healthcare. It offered tips on disease management, including distinguishing Parkinson's from other conditions, considering treatment timing, and preparing for hospitalization.

Various significant topics related to Parkinson's disease were also covered, including optimizing physical therapy sessions, preventing aspiration pneumonia through swallow studies, shared decision-making in treatment, nutrition's role, demoralization, antidepressants, research funding, and the potential for personalized medicine.

The talk also highlighted ongoing research, such as closed-loop systems, temporal interference therapy, neuroimmune approaches, and biomarker development. It stressed patient involvement, organizational support, and access to resources for individuals with Parkinson's.

Lastly, Dr. Okun discussed on the benefits of mono-tasking, the role of artificial intelligence in Deep Brain Stimulation, CBD oil for anxiety relief, and various aspects related to Parkinson's, including the use of chemicals, Duodopa® pump efficacy, levodopa side effects, and restless leg syndrome prevalence in Parkinson's patients.
