Ask the Expert: Eye Health and Parkinson's (2022)

In this webinar on eye health in Parkinson's disease, Dr. Jason Barton focused on common problems, such as dry eyes and vision issues. Dry eyes, often due to reduced tear production and gland inflammation, can cause discomfort and blurred vision. Dr. Barton also explored dopamine's potential impact on the retina and the diagnostic role of eye movements in Parkinson's disease.

The webinar discussed Parkinson's disease's effects on vision and brain function, addressing contrast sensitivity and retina structure changes. It also touched upon visual hallucinations, convergence insufficiency, and strategies for symptom management. Eye movements were highlighted as diagnostic clues, revealing conditions like progressive supernuclear palsy and dyskinesia in Parkinson's. The webinar examined the use of eye movement tests for Parkinson's diagnosis and monitoring. Concerns were raised about the lack of scientific backing for commercial tests.

With respect to Parkinson's disease, the webinar covered vision exercises' efficacy, specialized eye care needs, eyelid issue treatments, dry eyes, blue lens glasses usage, and managing light sensitivity when watching TV. It also explored optic neuropathy's link to Parkinson's.
