In this webinar led by Dr. Patrick McGowan, a University of Victoria professor, the focus was on self-management programs for chronic health conditions. Dr. McGowan highlighted the significance of behaviour change and the challenges involved in self-health management. He outlined a six-session group-based program operated by trained volunteers, open to individuals dealing with any chronic health condition.
The British Columbia Ministry of Health provides a range of self-management programs, covering topics such as problem-solving, action planning, and goal setting, available in various languages and formats, including in-person and virtual sessions. The emphasis was on empowering individuals through self-efficacy to take charge of their health.
The webinar stressed the accessibility of the programs, highlighting the ease of online registration without any prerequisites or barriers. Specific programs for Parkinson's disease were also discussed, including the chronic conditions session program and the health coach program, tailored to address a variety of symptoms and concerns.
