New Diagnosis Workshop: Non-Motor Symptoms and Parkinson’s Treatment (2022)

In this presentation, nurse practitioner Joanna Davis addressed the management of Parkinson's disease, emphasizing the significance of exercise. She discussed the use of various medications, including levodopa-carbidopa, monoamine oxidase type B inhibitors, dopamine agonists, amantadine, and COMT inhibitors, detailing their benefits and side effects. The talk also covered alternative therapies such as supplements, dietary considerations including the MIND diet, Mediterranean diet, and probiotics, and the use of cannabis for symptom relief. Advanced therapies like levodopa gel intestinal infusion and Deep Brain Stimulation were also discussed.

The webinar additionally delved into the management of non-motor symptoms, covering issues such as constipation, bladder problems, orthostatic hypotension, anxiety, and depression. Strategies for addressing sleep issues like anxiety and REM sleep behaviour disorder were provided, alongside advice on creating a conducive bedroom environment and the use of treatments like melatonin and sedating medications. She emphasized caution in medication usage, the need for thorough symptom evaluation, and the vital role of exercise, resources, and support in maintaining an active and healthy life with Parkinson's disease.
