Global Symposium: Pioneering Research from the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (2021)

The American Parkinson's Disease Association (APDA) hosted this talk, featuring Dr. Rebecca Gilbert, highlighting pioneering research in Parkinson's disease. Dedicated to supporting those affected by the condition, the APDA provides diverse programs, including information centers, support groups, and educational resources. Notably, the organization prioritizes funding for research in key areas such as genetics, brain circuitry manipulation through Deep Brain Stimulation, and the neuroprotective effects of exercise. Their commitment extends to evaluating the impact of prior funding on scientific progress and promoting research on digital biomarkers for enhanced diagnostics.

In efforts to bridge the gap between research and patients, the APDA employs virtual roundtables and online platforms to clarify complex research for a wider audience. Recognizing the importance of exercise, the organization endorses the CDC's recommendations for older adults, emphasizing tailored exercise programs for Parkinson's patients, including stretching and balance exercises.

Emphasizing the significance of early diagnosis, this talk underlined the potential of slow-release drug formulations for a more natural delivery of dopamine. Acknowledging the variable responses to exercise, ongoing investigations explore the role of the microbiome in Parkinson's disease, offering new avenues for understanding the condition.
