Moving Forward, Together: Sleep Issues and Disorders (2021)

In this talk, Dr. Gary Leo, neurologist, addressed the widespread issue of sleep disturbances in both Parkinson's patients and their caregivers. Highlighting the significance of sleep for overall well-being, the talk underscored the various physical, cognitive, and emotional implications of poor sleep, including fatigue, memory difficulties, and heightened irritability.

Notable sleep problems in Parkinson's included insomnia, exacerbated by certain medications like amantadine and selegiline, as well as nocturia, daytime sleepiness, and dream enactment behavior. Management strategies suggested during the talk encompassed adjustments to medication regimens, the promotion of healthy sleep practices, and the use of melatonin for sleep maintenance insomnia, alongside cautionary advice against prolonged napping. Additional treatments such as antidepressants, sleep-promoting medications, and specific interventions for bladder issues and restless legs syndrome were also highlighted, emphasizing the importance of consulting healthcare professionals for individualized care.
