Advanced Therapies Panel: Duodopa® (2021)
In this webinar, Dr. Daryl Wile, a movement disorder specialist, along with Jan Gibbon, a person with Parkinson's, and Terry Gibbon, a carepartner, discussed medication response fluctuations in Parkinson's disease and the role of the therapy option, Duodopa®, in addressing these challenges. The talk illuminated the insufficiency of dopamine in Parkinson's patients, leading to symptoms and inconsistent medication responses over time, attributed partly to reduced dopamine-producing cells and absorption issues in the gut. Medical evaluations, physical examinations, and motion tracking tools were highlighted as crucial in assessing medication responses and tailoring dosages.
The presentation delved into the mechanics of Duodopa®, emphasizing its continuous levodopa delivery through a pump inserted into the small intestine via a stomach tube, with a recognition of associated risks and potential complications. Testimonials from patients underscored the positive impact of Duodopa® in providing extended on-time and reducing dyskinesia, despite challenges such as tube-related discomfort, pump weight, and heat issues. The supportive role of healthcare professionals in ensuring a seamless experience with Duodopa® was emphasized, particularly in facilitating its implementation in various locations in British Columbia, including Vancouver, Surrey, and potentially the Victoria area, in collaboration with specialists familiar with the therapy.
