Advanced Therapies Panel: Deep Brain Stimulation - Guest Speaker Portion (2021)
In this guest speaker portion of the webinar, Leslie Davidson shares her personal experience with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson's disease alongside her daughter and caregiver, Naomi Ford.
She had DBS surgery a year ago to mitigate dyskinesia caused by Parkinson's disease. The surgery successfully improved her quality of life, allowing her to engage in activities she previously struggled with. Leslie had a positive experience during the surgery, despite some initial discomfort. Her family provided support throughout the process, and she are grateful for the positive outcomes of the surgery.
She also discusses the positive effects of DBS on her dyskinesia, tremors, muscle tension, and balance. She also mentions the need for medication adjustments post-surgery and the importance of self-calming strategies during the surgery. Finally, Leslie encourages getting a referral early and mentions the frequency of follow-up visits after DBS surgery.
