June Symposium: Non-motor Symptoms (2021)

Dr. Keiran Tuck, a neurology specialist, delivered this webinar on non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. He emphasized the impact of the disease on various bodily functions such as drooling, swallowing dysfunction, nausea, constipation, and autonomic dysfunction, along with potential side effects from Parkinson's medications.

The webinar also touched on topics including the use of botox injections for bladder issues, sexual response and libido changes, low blood pressure, and different types of pain experienced by patients. Management options discussed encompassed both pharmacologic, such as NSAIDs and gabapentin, and non-pharmacologic methods like physiotherapy, exercise, and massage. Dr. Tuck cautioned against the limited research on cannabis as a pain treatment and clarified various concerns including distinguishing Parkinson's disease from multiple system atrophy and managing non-motor symptoms like depression and sleep disturbances. Additionally, exercise, stretching, and posture correction were recommended strategies for symptom management, while the impact of cannabis on cognitive function and the significance of hand and nail discoloration were also addressed.
