March Symposium: Mental Health in Parkinson's (2021)

In this webinar, Courtney Doherty, a registered clinical counselor from Parkinson Society BC, focused on the mental health challenges associated with Parkinson's disease, emphasizing the distinction between physical symptoms and psychological issues like depression, anxiety, and apathy.

Courtney highlighted the difficulties in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders in this context, urging self-awareness and the pursuit of appropriate support. The webinar outlined various treatment approaches such as medication, psychotherapy, mindfulness techniques, and complementary therapies like exercise, art therapy, and music therapy. Additionally, it explored cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), stressing the significance of reframing thoughts, practicing mindfulness exercises, and incorporating positive affirmations and journaling for improved emotional well-being.

The session also provided practical tips for managing mental health in conjunction with Parkinson's, advocating practices such as deep diaphragmatic breathing, maintaining physical activity, limiting news consumption, and seeking support from both professionals and loved ones. Moreover, it addressed the unique complexities of Parkinson's symptoms and the issue of shame within the context of the disease.
