March Symposium: Falls Prevention in Parkinson's (2021)

During this webinar, Dr. Naaz Parmar, a geriatrician, highlighted the prevalence and consequences of falls in the elderly, emphasizing that falls often result in hospitalization and significant lifestyle changes. Addressing various risk factors such as age, deconditioning, fear of falling, vision changes, and medication use, Dr. Parmar underscored the importance of targeted interventions to reduce the risk of falls.

The session also delved into the significance of maintaining muscle mass and effectiveness, recommending exercises such as the Strategies and Actions for Independent Living (SALE) program and tai chi, along with vitamin D supplementation. Environmental hazards were also addressed, with recommendations for home modifications and safety assessments by occupational therapists.

Furthermore, the webinar discussed the specific risks and modifiable factors related to falls in Parkinson's disease, offering insights into the role of occupational therapy and the importance of addressing related issues like osteoporosis through appropriate screenings and treatments.
