New Diagnosis Workshop: Parkinson's Treatment (2021)

In this webinar, movement disorder neurologist, Dr. Melissa Mackenzie highlighted the individualized nature of treatment for Parkinson's disease, emphasizing the significance of medication like levodopa carbidopa and the pivotal role of exercise in managing symptoms. The discussion encompassed potential side effects of levodopa, the use of advanced therapies such as deep brain stimulation and intestinal gel infusion for motor fluctuations, and the management of non-motor symptoms with therapies including talk therapy and medications.

The webinar also addressed concerns about the use of CBD oil, the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine for Parkinson's patients, potential interactions between high protein foods and medications, and the limited evidence supporting alternative therapies like Alexander Technique and acupuncture.

Additionally, it highlighted research updates on dyskinesias, stressing the influence of the changing brain over time in their development. The session concluded by underscoring the role of various exercises in managing Parkinson's disease progression, clarifying the absence of adverse interactions between L-dopa and most vitamin supplements, and emphasizing the gradual decrease in dopamine-producing brain cells over time.
