November Symposium: Staying Active in Winter (2020)
During this webinar, Shelly Yu, Parkinson Society British Columbia's very own neuro physiotherapist, emphasized the significance of exercise for individuals with Parkinson's disease, especially during the winter months. She outlined the neuroprotective benefits of exercise, stressing the importance of elements like aerobic and strength exercises, balance training, flexibility, cognitive stimulation, and behavioral changes within an exercise regimen tailored for Parkinson's patients.
Shelly advised aiming for moderate to high intensity exercise, targeting 70-85% of the maximum heart rate, and striving for 150 minutes of exercise weekly, spread consistently over several days. She emphasized the value of setting meaningful personal goals, recommending the documentation of these goals for increased motivation. Overcoming exercise barriers was also addressed, with suggestions such as incorporating shorter exercise sessions and maintaining an exercise journal and calendar for accountability and progress tracking.
