Parkinson's Medications: Medication Management (2020)

In this webinar, Pharmacist Amy Tran emphasized medication management in Parkinson's disease, particularly focusing on levodopa as a primary medication. She outlined different medication classes used in treatment, including dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors, COMT inhibitors, anticholinergics, and NMDA receptor antagonists.

The webinar stressed understanding terms like "wearing off" and "dyskinesia" for effective medication control. Amy highlighted motor fluctuations in Parkinson's, such as wearing off and dyskinesia, detailing management options like adjusting levodopa dosage or frequency, adding medications from other classes, or switching to controlled-release formulations to address wearing off.

She also discussed strategies for tailoring medication treatment based on individual symptoms, emphasizing flexibility in dosing and timing, and the importance of effective communication with healthcare providers for optimal management. Various tools and strategies were suggested, such as blister packs and containers, to organize and adjust medication regimens for better symptom control.
