Ask the Expert: Recreational Therapy - What the Rec? (2018)

Nicole Sales, recreational therapist, introduces the field of recreation therapy, including the definition of recreation and leisure. The talk discusses the goals and process of recreation therapy, which involves assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The talk also explores the five domains of recreation therapy: social, physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual health, and how these domains can be improved through various activities and interventions.

The leisure ability model consists of three stages: functional intervention, leisure education, and recreation participation. Functional intervention focuses on acquiring prerequisite skills for leisure involvement, such as physical, social, emotional, and cognitive abilities. Leisure education involves developing knowledge and skills related to leisure awareness, resources, activities, and social interaction. Recreation participation is the ultimate goal, where individuals can independently seek out and participate in leisure activities for enjoyment and self-expression.
