Ask the Expert: Occupational Therapy - Live Life to the Fullest! (2018)

Gina Fernandez, occupational therapist (OT), discusses occupational therapy as a regulated medical profession aimed at enhancing individuals' lives by evaluating their ability to perform daily activities considering various factors. The Canadian model of occupational performance and engagement was highlighted to comprehend the connection between a person, their activities, and the environment.

OT recommendations encompassed multiple areas: remediating deficits, teaching compensatory techniques, offering adaptive equipment, cognitive exercises, organization, energy conservation, pacing, ergonomic assessments, anxiety reduction strategies, and home modifications to prevent falls. They also included providing equipment for the bedroom and bathroom, along with exercises for fine motor development.

Moreover, occupational therapists suggested anxiety reduction methods like deep breathing and sensory strategies, evaluated driving capabilities, and proposed modifications for safety. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists and psychologists, was emphasized for a holistic approach in providing comprehensive care for clients.
