Ask the Expert: Naturopathic Medicine Research Updates (2018)
In this webinar, Dr. Laurie Mischley, Naturopathic Doctor from Seattle, discussed recent updates in the field. She highlighted the Integrative Medicine think tank collaboration and the link between gastrointestinal inflammation and the production of alpha-synuclein, a protein associated with Parkinson's. Emphasis was placed on exercise, social engagement, mindfulness, a plant-based diet, and collaboration with healthcare providers for effective disease management.
The importance of exercise was underscored, recommending a minimum of three days per week for disease modification effects. Various exercises like yoga, tai chi, and intensive cycling programs were considered beneficial but with limited data. The significance of cognitive focus and stepping out of comfort zones for neuroplasticity was highlighted. Social health and community involvement were also noted as having positive effects.
Regarding diet, she advised against consuming dairy milk due to potential risks and questioned the use of calcium supplements. She discussed concerns with game meat and the importance of mindful practices like meditation and yoga, along with sleep and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables for neuroprotection. Specific recommendations included exercise programs tailored for Parkinson's patients, optimal fish oil supplement dosage, the complexity of bone health, and the impact of chronic gut inflammation on nutrient absorption.
