Ask the Expert: RoadSafetyBC - Driving and Parkinson's (2016)

Catherine Douglas and Kevin Murray from RoadSafetyBC joined Parkinson Society British Columbia in an engaging presentation about driving and Parkinson’s disease. RoadSafetyBC, formerly known as the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, oversees road safety in BC and assesses driver fitness using medical information and guidelines. The program may necessitate additional assessments, like drivable assessments or ICBC road tests, and unfit drivers face potential license cancellation.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease can continue driving with physician support, provided they meet the necessary requirements. The webinar on Parkinson's disease and driving regulations outlines the process of disclosing the condition to ICBC and its potential impact on driving privileges. It notes that medical professionals can issue a driver's medical report form for those with Parkinson's, and information may be obtained through a Freedom of Information request. Emphasizing the importance of following medical advice, the talk highlights the potential legal consequences of driving against medical recommendations.
