Ask the Expert: Balance Training Research (2016)

Irene Wong, a PhD Candidate in Rehabilitation Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, presents her study on a multi-system balance training program designed for individuals with Parkinson's disease. She underscores the adverse effects of balance issues and falls on those with Parkinson's and stresses the crucial role of exercise in enhancing balance and preventing falls. Irene introduces diverse exercises, including dancing, boxing, and virtual reality, to improve balance and gait performance in people with Parkinson's.

The study on multi-system balance training for Parkinson's disease involved a comprehensive program incorporating indoor and outdoor exercises like modified Wing Chun martial arts, balance stands, and square snapping exercises. The results demonstrated significant improvements in balance, gait, and functional performance in both short and long term, reducing the risk of falls and injuries. However, certain high-risk outdoor tasks were deemed unfeasible due to safety concerns. The study recommends individuals with Parkinson's consult with a doctor and exercise under the supervision of professionals specialized in Parkinson's care.
