Global Symposium: Sleep Disorders (2024)
In this webinar, Dr. Okeanis Vaou, a board-certified sleep specialist and expert in movement disorders, discussed sleep disorders in Parkinson’s disease, focusing on their impact and management. She covered REM sleep behaviour disorder, which often precedes diagnosis and increases injury risks, insomnia affecting most patients due to pain and anxiety, and excessive daytime sleepiness influenced by medications. Restless Leg Syndrome, common in Parkinson’s, was also explored with management strategies.
Dr. Vaou emphasised sleep hygiene, including consistent schedules and optimised environments, while urging caution with medications due to potential side effects.
