Navigating Anxiety in Parkinson’s Disease (2024)

Annalee Owens-Wallace, a registered nurse at UBC Movement Disorders Clinic, led the webinar on anxiety in Parkinson’s disease, discussing its prevalence as a non-motor symptom affecting patients and caregivers. She outlined its forms, such as generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks, and its impact on emotional and physical health. Treatment strategies included pharmacological options like SSRIs and non-pharmacological approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and exercise. She stressed the importance of recognizing anxiety, tailoring treatments, supporting caregivers, and empowering individuals through coping tools like mood diaries and social support networks.
