New Diagnosis Workshop: Introduction to Parkinson's Disease (2024)

In this webinar, Dr. Jonathan Squires introduced Parkinson's disease by explaining its definition, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. He described it as a neurodegenerative disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells and the presence of Lewy bodies. Dr. Squires noted that while the exact cause remained unclear, both genetic and environmental factors played roles.

He outlined key motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremors, as well as non-motor symptoms like mood changes and sleep issues. Diagnosis was said to rely on clinical observation, as no definitive test currently existed. Dr. Squires emphasized the disease’s growing prevalence in Canada and the importance of medical, lifestyle, and social interventions. He highlighted that exercise and support systems were essential for managing symptoms and maintaining quality of life.
