New Diagnosis Workshop: Living Well with Parkinson's (2024)
In this webinar, neuro-physiotherapist Michelle McCarthy and nurse practitioner Joanna Davis shared practical strategies for living well with Parkinson’s disease. They emphasized the importance of regular exercise in slowing symptom progression and improving overall wellbeing. Michelle and Joanna discussed the need to build a multidisciplinary care team, manage medications effectively, and adopt a balanced, nutrient-rich diet.
They addressed the management of non-motor symptoms such as sleep disturbances and constipation through lifestyle and dietary adjustments. Mental health was highlighted as a key concern, with suggestions including counselling, mindfulness, social connection, and, when appropriate, medication.
They encouraged engagement with support networks and resources like Parkinson Society BC. The webinar aimed to empower newly diagnosed individuals and their families with tools to improve daily life and long-term outcomes.
