New Diagnosis Workshop: How Your Healthcare Team can Enhance Your Daily Life (2025)

In this webinar, Elaine Book, a social worker at the UBC Movement Disorder Clinic, and Yolanda Wang, a registered dietitian, presented on the vital roles of social work and nutrition in Parkinson’s disease management.

Elaine emphasized the emotional, social, and practical challenges patients face and highlighted the importance of education, emotional support, and proactive care planning. She addressed key issues such as disclosure in the workplace, managing anxiety and depression, coping with loss and grief, and supporting carepartners.

Yolanda focused on the impact of nutrition, advocating for balanced diets like the Mediterranean and DASH diets, and exploring the gut-brain connection in Parkinson's.

Both presenters stressed the value of self-management, patient empowerment, and multidisciplinary collaboration as essential strategies for improving quality of life and health outcomes in Parkinson’s care.
