Understanding Disability-Related Financial Supports (2025)

This webinar, led by the Disability Alliance of BC (DABC), provided an in-depth overview of the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) in Canada, outlining its purpose, eligibility requirements, application process, and related benefits. Catherine and Ophelia from DABC discussed how the DTC reduces taxes for Canadians with severe, prolonged impairments and can be applied retroactively for up to ten years.

They explained that eligibility depends on how impairments restrict daily living activities, not on diagnosis, income, or work ability. The presenters detailed how to complete medical forms, emphasizing clear, specific descriptions of restrictions, particularly for mental functions such as memory, judgment, and behaviour regulation.

Catherine later expanded on the Canada Disability Benefit and the Registered Disability Savings Plan, describing eligibility, income limits, and savings incentives. The speakers also discussed appeals, reapplications, and the importance of persistence in the process. Throughout the webinar, they shared personal experiences, adding authenticity and practical insight to the guidance provided.
