Building Equitable Parkinson’s Care Across British Columbia (2025)
During this talk at the 2025 Parkinson Society BC Annual General Meeting, Dr. Daryl Wile presented on the state of Parkinson’s care in British Columbia. He focused on the need for equitable, rather than equal, healthcare, emphasizing the importance of tailored support and systemic justice.
Using provincial data, Dr. Wile illustrated geographic disparities in access to care, highlighting mismatches between patient locations and specialist availability. He discussed challenges such as long wait times, limited access to allied health services, and financial barriers, especially outside urban centres.
Telehealth and multidisciplinary models were presented as partial solutions, though not replacements for in-person care. Dr. Wile also described innovations like a primary care advice line, his clinic’s telehealth expansion, and research on accessible exercise routines. He concluded by underscoring the role of community, collaboration, and patient engagement in building a more inclusive and responsive Parkinson’s care system.
